National Award winning filmmaker Ajayan passes away at 66

Malayalam filmmaker and national award-winning director, who is known for making Perumthachan has passed away today due to massive cardiac arrest. The entertainment personality was 66. Interestingly, Perumthachan was the only film of his life for which he won the national award of the best debut director. He was the son of legendary playwright Thopil Bhasi. Ajayan was suffering from cancer and was going under treatment from the last two months.

The Filmmaker is survived by wife Dr Sushama and daughters Parvathy and Lakshmi. Talking about his film Perumthachan, it is Parayi Petta Panthirukulam, a legend in the Kerala folklore. The script was written by M T Vasudevan Nair and had also Filmfare Award for Best Film – Malayalam. The film was also nominated Golden Leopard Award.

The film dealt with the problems caused due to the generation gap and later are explored through the relationship between a skilled carpenter and his tradition-breaking son. It featured Thilakan, Prashanth and Vinaya Prasad in pivotal roles. Apparently, the actor wanted to bring the autobiography of his father Thopil Bhasi Olivile Ormakal to the silver screen but his wish remained unfulfilled.
